DESIGNING CITIES TO BE SAFER FOR WOMEN: GENDER PERSPECTIVES IN URBAN PLANNING (2016)

The safety of women in public space is an issue that’s been belatedly on people’s minds in the UK this week, and it’s upsetting to know that in many parts of the world this is an even greater problem than it is here. (It’s also troubling how often, even in the UK, violence against women is not considered newsworthy or politically important until it happens to an attractive young middle-class white woman - although of course it’s no less tragic when it does). This short talk by Ana Falú for UN-Habitat Worldwide is a good introduction to the topic. Falú examines some of the societal causes of poor gender representation in city design, particularly amongst non-white and lower-socio economic groups. She then looks at the way these can manifest, and at some of the key things we should consider when designing more gender- inclusive cities.
